Kim Catterill, loved by a generation in Sex and the City has added British broadcaster to her ouevre with her one day take-over of BBC’s Woman’s Hour. Let’s be clear this is not my usual go-to radio spot, however for Kim I’ll turn that dial and I can report she owned the show, just as she did on TV back in the day.
She went head-on into the question of how do we define what a mother is in 2015, speaking from the heart as someone who does not have children.
“there is a way to be a mother in this day and age that doesn’t include
your name on that birth certificate”
Let’s start by consigning the expression ‘childless’ to the rubbish-bin it should have resided in years ago. The question is whether being a mother can be more than being a biological mother? Ask anyone who has fostered or adopted a child. The answer is absolutely clear.
Or is it? Listening to Kim, she wasn’t talking about that sort of parent, the foster parent, the adopting parent who has committed to be there 24/7 for their child, made their home the child’s home, investing the full responsibility actually and emotionally that a parent does. The parent Kim is describing offers a special memorable relationship, rewarding and ‘mother-like’ connecting with her inner mothering instincts, to care, to nurture, to protect and to encourage, all elements of being a parent but somehow different. Different but not in a negative way.
I’m a huge admirer Kim, I love that you care so much and being your friend, a person you support must feel very special, but I can’t help but wonder if your students, relatives and young friends treasure most of all that you are not their mother, that you are someone else who has another special place in their life. If they were to hear that you think of them in parenting terms it might destabilise an otherwise brilliant relationship, possibly putting you at risk of losing their trust. So on this issue I’m disappointed to say I’m not with you but for the very best of reasons.
