Many parents ask how they can encourage their child to read. Actually not just read but enjoying reading. The good news is that summertime is the best time and together you can make the connection between reading and happiness.
Some children make that connection immediately but for others it takes time. Fostering a love of reading is like opening the door to a lifelong adventure. And the good news is Autumn is the best time. Without the pressure of a set reading list (okay second half of the holiday that may well kick in) start your adventure in your favorite bookshop or in the public library. If you are New York based go to HouseWorks Cafe which has an incredible section of very low cost, once loved, children’s books and achieve a double whammy and help someone else as all proceeds go to charity. If you are London based simply google and lots of really innovative reading projects will pop-up My Top Tips to get you started
Reading aloud is one of the simplest and easiest ways of encouraging your child. If you can convey your enjoyment and engage both you and your young listener in a good story you help enable your child to understand why reading is a pleasure.
When your child reads let them read at their own pace. As you read aloud to your child let them see the words and as you say each word trace under it with your finger.
Make stories come to life, discard your inhibitions if your going to be a roaring lion – then roar!
