KNOWING SOMETHING OUT OF CONTROL IS HAPPENING
BUT FEELING UNABLE TO HELP
A parent has shared this moving anonymous piece recently published on Motherlode about living with his self harming son. This is a topic we are all aware of but which is sadly still taboo. Yes, it is spoken about in an abstract way but very few parents share their fears and concerns in case it triggers another episode.
Much research is being done, current thinking suggests that the teen self-harmer is not suicidal but is looking for a way of coping with their own feels of negativity, depression and inability to cope with aspects of their life. It would be entirely wrong to think that it is an attention seeking medium as often the person who does it tries really hard to hide the fact. If asked how the cuts occur they may well say they fell over or accidentally cut themselves. There are many reasons why a person may self harm and the danger here is to be too simplistic, mental health issues and neurological conditions can also cause a person to want to hurt themselves, we are have decided to focus on those using it as an S.O.S.
The percentage of teens who ‘self-harm ‘ is far higher than most realize. As a society have we created an environment where there are more ways than ever to connect with other, coupled with many feeling more isolated than ever before? It also appears to affect more woment than men- is it the pressure to confirm to what society perceives as the ideal.
